fr. Hugh and I were ,monks during the same years at S. Joseph's
Abbey, Spencer. He was a warm and happy person. At that time we could never communicate (speak to one another do the rule of silence) except by signs... fr. hugh was able to communicate by his expressive smile, face and eyes May he be at peace. Former Brother Daniel. our submaster was Fr. Luke Anderson. .wonderful man.

I was privileged to meet Father Hugh several times, most notably when my husband and other Montague family members visited St. Mary's priory in 2007. Father Hugh's gentle, shining spirit, quick intelligence, and delightful wit will be missed here on earth.

Father Hugh was our dear Uncle Joe, the youngest and last remaining member of our father's family. He was a person of beauty and integrity - kind, intelligent, humorous and humble. Uncle Joe told me he was named Joseph Patrick because he was born between the feasts of St. Joseph and Saint Patrick. My Parents named me Joseph Patrick after him because I was born shortly after my Uncle Joe took his Cistercian vows. Uncle Joe took the religious name Hugh to commemorate 3 Hughs in his family: an older brother who died in his youth, his father and his grandfather were all named Hugh. ~ Joseph Montague, Pender Island, British Columbia Contact Me

Father Hugh was my "spiritual director "and like my
father " and an
"angel on earth" His funeral is held on my
paternal father's birthday March 16 Father Hugh helped me
as my sister and baby
were murdered and he
prayed everyday for
Justice. He told me
when his time comes
"we go will on direct
flight" My sincere
sympathy to Fr Luke
and the chapel family
and his remaining family. Pls pray for
the Cistercian order

God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow -
He was like a "father" to
me in many ways He always was there for me.
My paternal father passed 1990 and eleven years later I met Father Hugh who invited me to the chapel one morning I was on my way to
work and stopped in, and then the conversations began, and then the murder trial began 1994. Meeting Father
Hugh was a gift of divine Providence.THE Power of the Holy Spirit was with this Holy Man
And he told me when his time comes:
" they go straight up.'
And during the murder trial after my dear sister and
baby were killed, and Father was my
"angel on earth" " Father prayed and the trial was won . And they shall be
like Angels In Heaven" Matthew
Pls pray for the Cisterians to keep on
going.

Father Hugh, for over 40 years you greeted us at your front door with that huge smile. My family and I are saddened by your passing but we hold such wonderful memories of you.
