Agnes Louise Cleary

Agnes Louise Cleary, 90, of Orwigsburg, died Saturday at Genesis HealthCare-Orwigsburg Center, while in the company of family members.

Born in Orwigsburg, Sept. 7, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Elmer E. and Agnes Hummel Ahrensfield.

Formerly of Oakdale Estates, Orwigsburg, and Schuylkill Haven, she was the widow of William J. Cleary.

She was employed as a nurses aid at Rest Haven nursing home, Schuylkill Haven, for eight years and retired in 1982 due to health problems. She had also worked in the Blue Mountain High School cafeteria for seven years.

She was a member of St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church.

She was a member and past president of VFW Post 2198 Ladies Auxiliary and past president of American Legion Post 639 Ladies Auxiliary, both of Orwigsburg, the American Council of the American Legion and the 8 and 40 American Legion Auxiliary, both of Schuylkill County.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Margaret A. Decker; sisters, Daisie M. Heinbach and Jane Leymeister; brothers, Herman, Robert, William and Clayton Ahrensfield; and two infant siblings, Elmer and Edith.

Agnes is survived by daughters, Agnes "Cookie," wife of Robert Gries, Kathleen R., widow of Bruce Luckenbill, and Ruthmary, wife of John Zellers; sons, William J. Jr., husband of Beth Cleary, and Phillip M., husband of Terri Cleary; a sister, Anna, widow of Howard Collins; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. March 14 at Hamilton Funeral Home Inc., Orwigsburg, with Monsignor Edward S. Zemanik officiating. Friends are invited to call an hour before the service to meet with the family. Graveside services will be held in Salem Evangelical Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church Building Fund, 201 Randel St., Schuylkill Haven, PA 17972.
